LIVINGSTONE — The Zambia International Film Festival opened on Thursday at the Livingstone Museum grounds, showcasing 87 films from across Africa and the diaspora over five days of screenings, workshops and industry panels.
Festival director Josephine Bwalya said this year’s theme, “Rivers of Stories”, emphasised narratives from communities along the Zambezi, Kafue and Luangwa rivers. A Zambian documentary on Victoria Falls tourism workers won the opening night audience award.
Filmmakers from Nigeria, South Africa and Kenya attended pitching sessions with investors exploring co-production opportunities. The National Arts Council allocated K2 million in grants for three local feature projects entering pre-production.
Livingstone Mayor Constance Muleabai said the festival boosts low-season tourism, filling hotels and restaurants during the winter months. Tour operators reported a 15 percent uptick in advance bookings linked to festival packages.
ZNBC and DStv Zambia will broadcast highlights and panel discussions. Organisers plan to rotate the festival between Livingstone and Lusaka in alternate years to broaden geographic participation.
